In his sermon on Easter Sunday the Archbishop warned against putting trust in what he calls 'hero-leaders' as, being frail humans, they are bound to disappoint. In this he is drawing on history, and at the same time possibly predicting the future. Can anyone name a leader in recent history who did not eventually disappoint? His point was that to put all our hopes on such an individual is a form of cruelty as they cannot possibly fulfil our hopes and must eventually fall short.
