Andrew Marr show - LIVE from Perth. Do we need it?
- 30 October 2011 10:20134101The BBC continue to waste money on a grand scale. Im just looking at the Andrew Marr show as I do every sunday, but here we are, its coming LIVE from Australia. It just smacks of gravy train ism again. Why on earth do we need this general magazine programme to come all the way from Australia at LIVE rates. This involves not only sending Marr but technical people etc...all the way there. Ridiculous waste..particularly in hard times. They keep telling us its hard times.
I understand the need for a roving reporter to go and follow the Queen and maybe get some info on the Commonwealth leaders but moving whole programmes kit and caboodle is sheer waste. Nobody cares that much, it would do just as well to present it from London as always.
The latest trend has seen every tom dick and harry from the newsroom presenting from on top of a safe building in Tripoli too...every time there is an incident or a gathering at downtown anywhere nowadays they present the whole programme from there. and with whole reams of presenters too on 24 hour basis. Remember the 10 year remembering of 9/11. I dunno..such a waste.
The News section of the BBC have obviously had an increase in budget but are spending it in this superficial phoney man on the spot way. 30 October 2011 10:57134105I saw the trailer on Breakfast saying he was stuck there and wondered why Andrew Marr was there in the first place, was it his turn for a nice little jolly at our expense.
The BBC waste so much money especially the news department. The one that really annoys me is at "events" when the anchor man stands, as an example, outside no10 interviewing the political editor who more or less repeats what the anchor man has said.

If the BBC stop sending all theses people along with their crew around the world,we have plenty of 24 hour news already there would be a good possibility we as the viewing public could have some good television from a miffed sunday morning viewer. - 30 October 2011 11:22134111slightly off topic but read this morning that alan hansen gets paid £40 grand an appearance on match of the day.

- 30 October 2011 11:47134116No doubt there is a waste of money in places, as there is in any big organisation. I think sometimes, though, we don't see the full picture and assume stuff. For example, in some OB there are already crew in the area doing legitimate stuff and they can be used for the one off as well. It is a sort of hidden saving, but we all assume that shedloads of people have been bussed out for one broadcast.

Briant has covered Australia for years as a stringer on the spot for the BBC. Hardly likely oul Marr was just passing through Australia, or Sophie Raworth was just sunday driving in Tripoli...
That programme this morning looked particularly suspect.

- 31 October 2011 16:46134319Re. the Andrew Marr show .... my thoughts precisely. It reminded me of the Top Gear loony fest at Dover in 2007 when the team of presenters drove across the channel in various converted vehicles. Having realistically lost all pretentions of being a motoring programme Top Gear is one of the best comedy shows on TV, being also a huge money spinner for the BBC . You can therefore expect them to shell out a bit to present it.
Apart from the sizeable producton crew - which must have run into dozens, there were divers, a crane, local vessels and more - all of which had to be paid for (I've no idea what the arrangement was with DHB to use the hoverport).
Just as a reminder here are some pictures of the carnage.
James May, embarking on his channel odyssey, got about a hundred yards in his Triumph Herald before it sank.
Commodore Clarkson, in his pick-up, races out to rescue his chum, but then decided against it and went off to chat with people on the POW Pier instead.
Meanwhile, the Hamster just stooged around a bit!
