Barry, yes this is interesting. I always vote and it always makes me MAD when people don't vote (especially those who "can't be bothered" - they should get fined!!!). But I never realised there had been so few transfers of power in such a long period of time. Does this not somehow make a mockery of democracy? Are we not being conned into our using our "freedom" to simply vote for the next bunch of asses who will simply dictate to us for the next umpteen years?
But the "transfer of power" does seem these days to be just that - nothing more. I mean, I can barely see how it delivers a "transfer of ideaology" any more. None of the core values of the main powers seem to matter any more. Labour doesn't seem to be the socialist-loving commies they used to be, and the Conservatives don't seem to be rooted into the dirt of capitalist greed any longer, so what do they stand for? We have a Labour Party that looks like the Conservatives used to, a Conservative Party that looks like the Green Party used to, Lib Dems who STILL don't know what to be like, and the outsiders who are either just silly or extremist. We seem to vote for a new "management style" rather than a "politically-motivated party" these days. The next "transfer of power" will be sold purely on management talk, especially the ways to manage the economy, unemployment, etc etc, rather than the root values of the political parties (socialism, capitalism, or whatever you want to call them).
