We live in a democracy where the votes of millions of people remove a Government from power and transfer power elsewhere.
30 years ago today this happened and resulted in our first female PM.
So what is so amazing.
Have you not considered that there has only been one such transfer of power in the 30 years since...
In the 30 years before that it happened no less than 4 times:
Atlee gave way to Churchill
Douglas Home gave way to Wilson
Wilson to Heath
Heath back to Wilson.
So in a period of 60 years there has been just 6 transfers of power.
It is a rare event and one getting rarer. Those who dont vote and participate in this ultimate demonstration of people power should be ashamed of themselves.

This is not meant to be a party political thread Brian, but yes, my joining the Labour Party is about as likely as the moon being made of green cheese.

But you can see the chink in barryws armour now, the worry that maybe because of apathy the tories might not make it
desperation springs to mind, but im pleased barryw hAS at last recognised it is a problem and could effect the outcome and will in many seats
in the seat i mentioned in an earlier posting the apathy and large number of candidates will, i believe effect the result, which way has yet to be seen

I find it utterly amazing how some people can take something that is not a Party political thread, one that is making a simple observation that many may not have realised (indeed I had not thought of it like this previously), and to turn it into a silly pointless dig at me. Utterly pathetic.

Totally agree with you Barry. An interesting post from you followed by silly playground type comments - I give up
There's always a little truth behind every "Just kidding", a little emotion behind every "I don't care" and a little pain behind every "I'm ok".

Barry, yes this is interesting. I always vote and it always makes me MAD when people don't vote (especially those who "can't be bothered" - they should get fined!!!). But I never realised there had been so few transfers of power in such a long period of time. Does this not somehow make a mockery of democracy? Are we not being conned into our using our "freedom" to simply vote for the next bunch of asses who will simply dictate to us for the next umpteen years?
But the "transfer of power" does seem these days to be just that - nothing more. I mean, I can barely see how it delivers a "transfer of ideaology" any more. None of the core values of the main powers seem to matter any more. Labour doesn't seem to be the socialist-loving commies they used to be, and the Conservatives don't seem to be rooted into the dirt of capitalist greed any longer, so what do they stand for? We have a Labour Party that looks like the Conservatives used to, a Conservative Party that looks like the Green Party used to, Lib Dems who STILL don't know what to be like, and the outsiders who are either just silly or extremist. We seem to vote for a new "management style" rather than a "politically-motivated party" these days. The next "transfer of power" will be sold purely on management talk, especially the ways to manage the economy, unemployment, etc etc, rather than the root values of the political parties (socialism, capitalism, or whatever you want to call them).

you have summed up modern day politics and electioneering to the "t".
people used to know what each party stood for, not anymore.
surely the time has come for an additonal box on the election form, marked "none of this crowd".
at least it shows that people have turned up to the polling booth, it will counter the argument of the political elite that some people are too lazy to vote.

HOWARD
This happens in a diffrent way though, councils have some spoilt papers where someone will write wot they fink of an individual or all candidates
in the situation you suggest what would happen if the not interested vote came top?

Ah the predictable responses from one and all...
Anyway as Rick says what really changes? particularly in the last 30 years? Seems to me it is the same sky blue pink ideology no matter whose name is on the door of No10
