Claiming homes on expenses and then renting them out for private profit while enjoying two other taxpayer funded 'grace and favour' homes.
He claims not to have broken the rules, the usual cheap excuse we get. The rules then are certainly themselves 'broken' and need changing and as for Darling, words simply fail me.
Guido puts the case against Darling most succinctly....here

Incidentlaly, questions are now also being asked about Gordon Brown as well on the same subject. More may arise on that one too....

And the Tories don't do it,these MP's expenses are a joke, the system needs looking at and sorting, but it is not just Labour MP's some of your lot with thier Tax fiddles and off shore accounts are a lot worse.
If you knew what I know,we would both be in trouble!

barryw, the torys claim expenses as well as labour/lib dems,if you want to knock someone try looking at the torys track record before you start knocking labours.

The Tories do not get grace and favour homes, not since 1997 anyway. DC has made a commitment that no Minister in his Government with a G&F home will be able to claim 2nd home expenses. Brown was much more evasive.

It is irrelevant if say the Tories are claiming too, it doesnt make the problem go away, it doesnt make the problem any better. We had Hoon over the weekend in further dire straights about his expenses while Defence Minister. Its a terrible scandal all this. Politics is in the mud on account of it. If another one of these gravy snouting politicos says
"Im not breaking any rules!!"
I'll scream so I will. Okay at this juncture we have to recognise that the rules are sh*t, lets face it. So keeping within the rules matters not a jot. It all has such an unwholesome air about it. No doubt there are many more cases yet to see the light of day..

Paulb
you are correct in what you say, but wot barryw is indicating is that this is a labour problem, when in fact its out of control; and none o msajor parties are looking to make changes
Yep tories and DC looking to give each MPa salary of £100,000 hardly solving the real issue, they are paid to much!!!!!!

I think we are agreed about the rules. They need changing, a point I made. But even inadequate rules does not mean that the worse abusers of all Parties should be allowed to get away with a claim of 'I didnt break the rules'....

I haven't been online for a while so I'm catching up here. Having read all the posts on this thread in one hit, one thing is repeating itself - you all agree that the rules are wrong and that it's an all party problem. Yes it needs sorting out but why do we have to have postings 3,6 and 7 making personal remarks against the other posters?
Surely it would be more constructive if we came up with ideas on how the problem could be sorted out rather than infighting on here. Just my view.
There's always a little truth behind every "Just kidding", a little emotion behind every "I don't care" and a little pain behind every "I'm ok".

jacqui, nothing personal given just making a point to a persific person.
I was listening to Billy Bragg in the car on the way to work this morning - can't remember the title, but the song about the people with the power just because they are top of the pile - nailed it right there! "Politicians all become careerists" - so true. Democratically elected to shaft us, tick the boxes marked "democracy" then screw the voters. "They must declare their interests, but not their company cars".............chuck the lot of them and start again, with decent people who have a real committment to democracy for its own sake and not as a screen for self-serving money-grabbing, and a conscience bigger than a gnats wart.

1. This is within the rules on MPs expenses as currently framed
2. This is morally wrong (whoever does it or has done it in the past)
3. The rules need changing
4. Frankly, if I and many other hardy commuters can travel every day from Dover/Deal/Folkestone into London, do a days work and return home then so can MPs. Many workers in the City spend upwards of 2 hours travelling each way so why can't our MPs. A 2 hour commute frankly includes a huge swathe of the South, Southg East and Midlands
