I was walking down the road today and musing to myself about the amount of sand and grit covering a drain. Salt seems to have gone out of fashion for minor roads these days. In the past the salt dissolved. Now the sand and grit just sits there.
Doesn't bode well for future flooding does it?

Thats interesting there Terry and I expect many have not considered that problem. I would guess that the grit and sand is probably cheaper than salt and thats why they use it...its also a damn sight uglier but of course we are all greatly relieved when we get a bit of road/pavement treatment of any kind..so that even any short term fix is good....for now.

Someone I know knicked the new mix from the roadside bin last year for his own driveway - then his wife moaned at him because it got carried onto their nice cream carpet - justice!

I have been out over the last few days throwing sand over the road where I live , what a waste of time all it did was turn the snow a different colour.

that is what seems to happen in some places with the sand, nowhere near as effective as salt.

Personally I think the council should be using lo-salt which has a much lower sodium content. Sometimes the wind can carry tiny particles of this stuff into the air and can end up on the lips of children giving them blood pressure and other health related problems in later life.

I suppose this stuff wouldn't be much good when you think of the amount of snow on Everest.
