recieved a e-mail yesterday from HMCE informing me that I am entitled to a tax refund, just fill in the attached form, complete my bank details and a large sum of dosh will be paid into my account. Too good to be true? I've been retired almost two years and donot pay tax, nor have I recently completed a returns form.
The mail looks good, is signed and is full of reference numbers etc, so, one of two things, I am due some cash, or I am being scammed.
What do you think? My money is on the scam, so if you recieve a mail loke this then please be aware!

From HMRC website:
HMRC will never send notifications of a tax rebate, or ask you to disclose personal or payment information by email. If you have any doubt that an email you receive from HMRC is genuine please do not follow any links, disclose any personal details or respond to it. Please forward it to HMRC at
phishing@hmrc.gsi.gov.uk then delete it.

I would add that if you have opened any attachments in that email, it is probably worth running a virus scan ASAP, just to be safe.

Call Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040
http://www.actionfraud.police.uk/
This was way too hard to track down, and even now does not seem to be the best fit. But, if the return address can be looked into by 'someone', action could be taken against them.

That is the difficulty, all the effort is put into email fraud. Even when I tried to get Royal Mail into the picture, nothing popped up. Even though they have their very own Police Force.

I have not had one from purporting to come from HMRC,

mine usually come from banks with whom I do not even have an account.

I try to be neutral and polite but it is hard and getting even more difficult at times.

the fact it was an e mail says a lot. i received a letter from hmrc about a year ago telling me that i had overpaid tax about 6 years previously(not sure why they checked back) and said a cheque would be sent.
the very next morning a cheque arrived, thank goodness for the efficiency of the public sector.

Several people have beat me to it..
Yes - there are many such scams and they are getting cleverer and cleverer. Often the links lead to websites that look quite genuine but are not. Never verify through a link or phone number on the email.
'efficiency' and 'public sector' do not belong in the same sentence Howard. It is what you do not know by way of other overpayments that counts!!!!
