Conservative MP Rebecca Harris may be quite a looker but I do wonder at her lack of common sense.
She is putting forward a bill to move us onto Central European Time and, even sillier, there is a rumour that the government is minded to back her.
Everyone north of Manchester will start work in darkness at 9am under this proposal for 2 months of the year. That will not do the Conservative any good at all, oop north, where support is most needed...
Idiotic. Sometime governments and meddling backbenchers really should just leave things alone.

swings and roundabouts on this one, most businesses would go with it because of the streamlining of office hours across europe.
when the idea was first mooted it was pointed out that tourists would spend a lot more money during the season with the extra daylight hour.

I doubt that it makes any difference having the same time-zone as Europe at all and would cause more problems up north and in Scotland than it solves.

dave would disagree with you barry, he was very enthusiastic about the idea of extra revenue being raised in the leisure industries.
an extra hour is still an extra hour up in manchester or edinburgh.

A Labour government would have passed a law making each day 25 hours, giving everyone the best of both worlds.

The 25th hour could then be privatised by the Conservatives.

Seriously though, the amount of people that go to work already in the dark, why should it matter?
I quite often go to work in the dark, what you call that hour is irrelevant.

I find it hard to believe that even 'oop north' it makes a lot of difference whether you go to work in the dark or come home in the dark. It would make even less difference to shift workers, I used to work nights going in in the dark and (during the winter) going home in the dark. Surely if it helps to unify trading hours across Europe it could only be good for business, or is the objection because it is "across Europe"?
Politics, it seems to me, for years, or all too long, has been concerned with right or left instead of right or wrong.

When they did an experiment in the 70's for BST all year there was an upcry 'oop north so it does matter to people up there.

She also voted strongly for more Euro integration Barry so she seems to be ok - for a Tory
I am all for adopting CET. I have never understood why in the main tourist month (August) it is dark by 8.30 p.m. Northern European nations can cope so let Scotland get on with it, or vote to have their own time. Figures from ROSPA dispel many of the myths around the supposed disadvantages:

The light you loose in the morning you gain in the evening. A lot depends if you are a morning or evening person, personally I prefer light mornings.

Now I am only joking but
didnt we fight a war to avoid going onto Berlin Time the way the rest of Europe did?
and now a Tory is suggesting we do so?

Why not we each have our own time frame? If you feel that you miss so much daylight when you rise by the clock...rise when you wish. There used to be 'local' time years ago and that changed because of the new-fangled railway. As we can nowadays contact and interact with one another at any time instantly, why do we not revert to local-time? That way Dover (especially Dover) would be ahead of the game every day.
It is not as if any of us would miss our favourite TV show; now that each is repeated and repeated and most are available to view online at ones leisure.

The whole idea of changing our timezone is silly.
Britain is further West than Europe, so the timezone must also be different.
Bulgaria has a different timezone to Serbia, being further East.
If they go on with eurospin policies, next they'll be saying that leaves in Britain must fall from the trees a month earlier, to bring them in line with Europe.
Barry is right, the whole contemplation of changing these things is simply silly.

alex
it is nothing to do with the european union, it is purely a british initiative.
scotland has its own parliament, maybe they could elect to stay on the current time if they wish?
