    I also recall a time, actually way before the Channel Fixed Link even opened, when the CEO of one of the Flexilink players considered that the worst thing that could happen was for the CFL to fail. The theory went that its construction costs would then be written-off, leaving the ferries unable to compete with a CFL that only had to cover its operating costs.

    In the event, I guess you could argue that traffic growth, aided by the demise of Sheerness, Ramsgate and the Kent - Belgium routes, saved the day. Whether future traffic growth will/would be sufficient to sustain ferries and 2 fixed links, is another matter.
