    The nature of the beast that is capitalism is that is built on human greed and the fools promise of continuous growth - the downside is that in order to keep up with the Joneses, Schmidts etc. of this world those countries with low tax take etc. will borrow to deliver services that their constituents want - sadly borrowing needs to be repaid with interest and for Ireland, Greece, Portugal, Spain and Italy that particular bird has come home to roost. The upshot is that in order to satisfy their creditors they only have one choice - austerity measures. Sadly most municipalities in Italy and the other states mentioned have little to offer and therefore will just emulate the states they claim to be breaking away from.
