The BBC came out with the following news today, 3 September 2011
"A small town in central Italy has declared its independence and started to print its own banknotes."

Filettino, about 70 miles east of Rome, has declared itself a principality, and introduced a new coat of arms.
The move to independence comes in the face of unacceptable austerity measures in act in Italy, including laws to merge municipalities and sack local councils.

The introduction of the local currency, the fiorito, signs the end of the euro as legal tender in the territory of the new state.

The declaration of independence of the Principality of Filettino has received world-wide coverage.

According to BBC "the mayor says there is enormous enthusiasm about declaring the independence of the new principality."
