The BBC came out with the following news today, 3 September 2011
"A small town in central Italy has declared its independence and started to print its own banknotes."
Filettino, about 70 miles east of Rome, has declared itself a principality, and introduced a new coat of arms.
The move to independence comes in the face of unacceptable austerity measures in act in Italy, including laws to merge municipalities and sack local councils.
The introduction of the local currency, the fiorito, signs the end of the euro as legal tender in the territory of the new state.
The declaration of independence of the Principality of Filettino has received world-wide coverage.
According to BBC "the mayor says there is enormous enthusiasm about declaring the independence of the new principality."

It's a question of identity, Roger. Many councils in Italy face being sent home, and the status of municipality being taken away from small towns that have a history going back 1000-2000 years or more!
We can see where EU economy leads to, to austerity, and to loss of local identity within a state! This could cause countries to fall apart!
I think we can look at Scotland, which is gradually moving along a more self-conscious road of national identity.
The possible demise of the Tory Party there is another evident move demonstrating the end of Brussels-style block governement, the end of 1984 style centralisation of administrative and economic powers.

ps,just rememberd the american mortgage scandell.a home for for every person in the usa.ok fine untill they [the american public]couldnt keep up the monthly repayments.this was caused by the american banks keeness to sell to all and sundry without the proper cheaks.

The nature of the beast that is capitalism is that is built on human greed and the fools promise of continuous growth - the downside is that in order to keep up with the Joneses, Schmidts etc. of this world those countries with low tax take etc. will borrow to deliver services that their constituents want - sadly borrowing needs to be repaid with interest and for Ireland, Greece, Portugal, Spain and Italy that particular bird has come home to roost. The upshot is that in order to satisfy their creditors they only have one choice - austerity measures. Sadly most municipalities in Italy and the other states mentioned have little to offer and therefore will just emulate the states they claim to be breaking away from.

Brian, without Germany, the eurozone is dead!
Germany is about to either:
1 pull out of the euro
2 collapse.
