Saturday our dog, Millie, did not eat and did not get out of her bed. We thought she had a bad tummy as the day before she was lively, jumping around being her usual lively and pesty self.
Later in the day it because clear it was worse than that.
She has been treated by pain-killers for over a year due to having bone cancer and I realised, later in the day, that maybe her time was running out and I decided I would have to contact the vet out-of-hours service the next morning.
Sadly though she died peacefully that night.
I am not overly sentimental about animals but that dog was good company for me over a fairly difficult period and she is a real loss. This morning I got up and automatically went to her room but, of course, she was not there...
One good thing though, she died peacefully and had a good quality of life right to the day before she finally went downhill and died.
A strange thing happened. While watching tv Saturday the lounge door thrust open as it often did when Millie decided to join me in front of the tv... But no-one was there and Millie was just laying in her bed downstairs......

It's true that a dog is one habit that's never our choice to break. She'll be around for a while yet.
Did this call for a spot of gardening?

Due to her age my insurance ran out in February and in March she had to have an operation costing £600.... bad timing, a month earlier and insurance would have paid for it! It did give her a new lease of life for a month or so...
No Tom - a trip to Canterbury to be cremated. I do not have 'that kind' of garden!

Sorry about that Barry. I have a cat who adopted me 15 years ago. She now has kidney disease, common with cats, so her days are numbered now. I don't get too sentimenatal over animals either but it will seem strange when she's gone.

I am so sorry to hear that Barry W, at least you can take some comfort that Millie had a peaceful passing at home with her family. We lost our beloved Sheba last year, she was 18, and I know what a wrench that was. For weeks afterwards we were automatically calling her, looking for her or going to check her food. I swear I still sometimes catch a fleeting shadow or hear a low kind of sigh she used to make. Animals can become such a big part of our lives, they are like family.

Barry, I think most of us that have had a long term pet die will understand how you must be feeling it takes a while to get out of that kind of habit. When buying new flea collars for our other cats I picked up one too many at first, I had to take my 20yr old cat for his final visit to the vet last year and even though I knew it was coming I still found it the hardest thing to do.

I try to be neutral and polite but it is hard and getting even more difficult at times.

BarryW.
Very sorry to hear this sad news, pets do become part of the family and it is always sad for everyone, even family friends. Good to hear she went peacefully with no pain.

BarryW, I am so sorry. It isn't sentimental at all to miss a long time companion who has given you so much and asked so little. I still miss my beloved Albert cross terrier who went over 20 years ago and Faceache, the cat who went aged 22 just before that (she had been mine all that time) , as well as all the other dogs and cats in between. Remember her and treasure those memories.

AW Barry . Sending huge hugs
I am down to one dog but i will admit to being sentimental, we lost Sam in November, but couldnt say anything as my brother was in Afghanistan and we didnt want to upset him.
Poor Dad took Sam to the vets and last week when he took Big Ears the receptionist said they hadnt seen a grown man quite so upset over a dog... Big softies in our household. Goodness knows what he will be like when Big Ears gets old!

Sad to hear this news of Millie's passing Barry, I met her quite a few times over the years, she was such a lovely dog. I know you will miss her lots but she will be around and about the house in spirit watching over you I'm sure.
