Time was when it was the likes of barbers and string-quartets that had it easy in such places, nowadays it is the cleaning and gardening that can earn inmates brownie points and as much as £1 a day, of course such 'employment' is a privilege.
No complaining and no back-chat, or it's back to not being able to afford the luxuries of life, toiletries and the like.

What could happen to the cost or the profit IF somebody was paid the minimum wage for the cleaning and gardening?
Perhaps it was the mention of a mere £1 that confused the issue?
