- hearty congratulations to rupert bear on reaching that milestone, celebrated at the museum bearing his name in canterbury.
 drawn first by mary tourtel for 15 years then alfred bestal for the next 40 years then a few others, he has managed to survive attacks by a cartoonist on the same paper, carl giles. he used to do tiny bits in the background of his cartoons. in 1971 rupert was shot by a firing squad, the following year he was torn to pieces by the family dog, the final indignity came when he was hung in 1980.
