16:4973709 Another bit of paperwork here I saved from being dumped when the paper mill at Dover was being modernised. I`m assuming it`s for a tram shelter for mill employees(?), though I haven`t spotted any in photograph`s of Dover trams. The title here though is for the above address, and from Pike`s Blue Book of Dover, it seems to be quite a large and busy place. R.E. Knocker is still shown as resident there in 1938. Was it a main council building? Lovely piece of old parchment this letter is printed on, and just coming up to 90 years old!

17:0573713According to Pike`s Blue Book for 1937 Paul, there was Knocker, Elwin and Lambert, solicitors, and coms for oaths. E.T. Lambert Esq, was also the coroner for Dover, and clerk to the Dover R.D.C. not to mention a few other things as well. Next door, at No 71, was a Miss Ambrose confectioner and also C. Martin, a ladies hairdresser.

17:0873714You are almost right Paul, the firm in those days would have been Knocker,Elwin & Lambert. Miss Lambert the senior partner was in fact Mrs. Pain, her husband Reggie Pain was the senior partner in Lewis & Pain which was also in Castle Street.
Miss Lambert for many years was a magistrate sitting on the local bench. She was truly a very nice lady whose wealth never influenced her in any way.
Eventually Knocker, Elwin & Lambert acquired Aldington & Davies whose partners were struck off by the Law Society back in the 60s. Knocker, Elwin & Lambert then merged with Bradle,Chiity & Scorer and was renamed Bradleys.
I never knew Mr. Knocker but would imagine they are both one of the same.

17:4073717Could be Howard, and Sydney (not Sidney), was the manager of the A.B.C. cinema just down the road. It`s also facinating to see all the old single, double and three figure telephone number`s. I wonder if anyone with time on their hands, has ever compiled them all for the period before the four digits and more arrived?

13:1973815The present Gateway would appear to be 63-71 Castle St, the front door is 71, and Action Carpets is 55-61, so 69 must have been on what is now part of the Gateway offices.

13:3273818When my father died back in 1968 Roger Pain was the solicitor who acted for us. I still see him sometimes in the street and he always says hello.

13:3473820 This Gateway building is a good example of how building`s shouldn`t be. Completely un-sympathetic to the lovely old building`s remaining in Castle street further up.

08:3773901These were taken shortly before the original opening in March 2006 before it was extended into the former TSB premises
The safe was transported from the old Area Office and caused those moving it much scratching of heads as they worked out how to get it into its final corner without trapping any one behind it.
