50th anniversary Betrlin Wall being erected
- 13 August 2011 19:06120506Ceremonies today in Germany marked the 50th anniversary of the construction of the Berlln Wall.

I much preferred the news stories of it coming down.Politics, it seems to me, for years, or all too long, has been concerned with right or left instead of right or wrong.
Richard Armour - 13 August 2011 19:31120516With my parents 2 sisters and 2 brothers we travelled through Berlin en route to Warsaw to visit family, in 1960. Tensions were running high and the British government said they were unable to guarantee our safety.
We travelled to Harwich via the Hook of Holland by car. A 1948 Bradford Jowett.

a) i was brought up to believe that the wall was built to stop people from the east moving to the west, later it transpired that people from the west were going east for cheap groceries, hence the wall.
b) it was a big political moment when the wall came down, not to people from the east though.
they seemed more concerned with buying a pair of trainers with the money given from the federal government.
