I knew that area well as I worked just across the road from Brick Lane; there are some good Indian restaurants there.

There was a remembrance service 4 or five years back to the Jewish bombing victims of ww2 in this aria ,and the fanatic started stoning the crowd.

I'm sure the ordinary Muslim business people don't want to be drawn into that nonsense. I used to visit lots of the Indian clothes wholesalers round there when I worked for Natwest at their computer centre and they were all very nice, but astute, businessmen.

roger refers to india and keith to pakistan, in my recollection brick lane is almost totally bangla deshi.
about 15 to 20 years back a study was done on the effects of extreme right thugs in the area, the conclusion from local business persons was that they wanted protection from the gangs in their own community rather than a few slogan shouting yobs.

I didn't draw any distinction really Howard, I wouldn't know where they came from - Pakistan, Bangladesh and India were all the same country once.

indian restaurants serve alcohol roger, having said that i used to frequent a "restaurant" in humberstone street in whitechapel, lousy decor but excellent and very cheap food. run by a devout muslim family who would not sell alcohol but customers could bring a bottle of wine along and they would uncork it and supply glasses.
doubt if they would be allowed to get away with that today.

There are a number of Indian/Bangladeshi/Pakistani restaurants who offer a BYO (bring your own) drinks; works very well too and in fact draws more people in.
