I remember it well. I was working in the City at the time and living in Canterbury. We lost over 20 large trees from our garden that night which kept us in firewood until 2002 when we sold the house. There was probably 20 years’ supply remaining then. My boss at the time lived in Surrey but had a weekend house in Sandgate. He usually came down to Kent on a Thursday night but delayed for a day because the wind was getting up. Thank God he did because when he got there on Saturday morning the chimney stack had come down ( it was a big 4-storey Victorian house), crashed through the roof, landed on the bed in the master bedroom and taken the whole lot down to the cellar. Certain death if they had been in the house at the time.
