The Front Page - Copy 44 (Remembrance Sunday)

9 November 2009

Remembrance Sunday:

As you can see from the pictures now added at the top of the page, there was a marvellous turnout. I believe too that the turnout throughout the entire country also increased significantly. The general public of all political persuasions are clearly sympathising with the difficult situation our current soldiers are experiencing in Afghanistan, and this ongoing situation brings home the sacrifices previous generations went through on our behalf.

Dover Town Councillors in solemn mode during the service, as ever there was an excellent turnout from dignitaries from all walks of life and we will have more shots later. Left to right, and all Councillors of course...Gordon Cowan former mayor, Jan Tranter former mayor and currently deputy mayor, Ronnie Philpott mayoress, Roger Frayne, David Hannent, and in the background Chris Precious and David Lloyd.

Some of the mighty warriors from times past wait in line to lay their wreath at the Memorial. Heroic medal laden figures as you can see. Sadly the figures from World War II are becoming fewer and fewer.

The picture on the left shows the current Mayor Cllr Sue Jones, with on the left, the Area Commander of Kent Fire Services Paul Flaherty and on the right hand side, Chris Hogben Area Commander of South Kent Police. The picture on the right shows Town Clerk Mike Webb who has just returned to the fray after a recent serious illness. Many are glad to see Mike's return to duty. We also have further pictures of Mike which will be used shortly in our next Who's Who feature. See Menu.

Three lovely ladies here in sombre atire. In the centre the familiar face of Mayoress Cllr Ronnie Philpott, while to the left we have the perhaps not quite so familiar face of Judge Adele Williams and on the right Anita Peall. Always nice to have new additions to our picture coverage.

Former KCC representatives for Dover Town, Bill Newman and Gordon Cowan, are seen here on the left. Both still Councillors of course with Gordon being a former Mayor too, an ever pleasant hard working duo. The picture on the right is self explanatory...much feeling being expressed as you can see.

On the left we have our Labour MP Gwyn Prosser with the wreath he was about to lay. With him is the current Deputy Mayor and former Mayor Jan Tranter. Jan also laid a wreath as per tradition. The picture on the righthandside shows the Rev David Ridley as he conducts the service centre stage. The Rev Ridley always manages to strike the right note during these sensitive services.

Solitary Man: After the ceremony on Remembrance Sunday, a solitary figure looks on in contemplative mood at all the wreaths laid earlier by local dignitaries such as Gwyn Prosser MP, Charlie Elphicke, Mayor Sue Jones, Former Mayor's Gordon Cowan and Jan Tranter, and many more. The biggest crowd in recent times attended, and although it was a chilly day, it was a heartwarming experience for all. It was also fantastic to see the number of young people who attended this year.

Picture Credits: All pictures by Paul Boland and Colette Boland...with an extra shot from Karol Steele of the Rev David Ridley.
