Who said those HGV licenses were getting easier to achieve! Well honestly, this wise ol' dog drove this truck into position today, then stopped, parked, rolled the window down for a breath of fresh air and leaned out to pose for the cameras...I dunno..
Well Okay... that might be a load of old blarney, but it really was a fun filled day in Pencester Gardens today saturday at the...
Hellfire Corner Weekend.
The sun shone, the stalls were fun, and the music was great, it even had them dancing in the aisles ( a fully laid dancefloor)...Im sure I saw Bud Flanagan, and then the Andrew Sisters...yes it was like a step back in time and of course you meet lots of friends and acquantances all enjoying the great day out, while "Pardon me boy! is that the chattanooga choo-choo!" rattles out merrily in the background.
Ooh that rhythm...
And here's the real bonus, its all entirely free! It doesn't cost you a red nickel to go along and soak up the atmosphere. So if you werent there today saturday as I write, its still on all day Sunday June 13.
Details further below on this page.

Above you can see just some of the vehicles on display. The pictures were taken early so the area had not filled up with the enthusiastic crowd that came later.
The guys on the left kind of sneak up on you...you cant see them coming due to the heavy camouflage. One minute they're not there, then you get tapped on the shoulder and with some difficulty you can just about make them out. These are the Help for Heroes team and were manning the stall to perfection. Tip top Forumite of long standing in the centre of the shot is none other than jovial Ian Lillford..he is flanked by serious helpers here, on the left we have young grandaughter Kasey, and on the right young Thomas Trethewey. All doing great charity work!

On the left here we have Barry Williams and Una Mills. Barry as many of you know is another long standing tip top Forumite, in fact he writes the best local political blog right here on Doverforum. But hardworking Barry is also the organisational mainstay of this very Event, being the Chairman of the committee. He was certainly working very hard both yesterday and earlier today, putting it all together
Next to him and enjoying a fun filled moment is the Treasurer of the Event, Una Mills...all decked out in fab forties apparel, as were many of the ladies...and all very nice too!

Now just added below is an Austin Cambridge Taxi from 1936. Lovely to see it. I expect this one could rattle the old bones of the unsuspecting passenger, especially over our twenty first century ever increasing calamitous burden...the great big gaping pothole, which are an unfortunate feature of the modern day highway.
On the right hand side below are the hard working duo who tirelessly run the Dover War Memorial Project. Seen here manning their stand on saturday morning in fine style, just before the event busied up. Yes its none other than the ever jovial couple Simon Chambers left and Maggie Stephenson-Knight. Doing a great job. Just below them the all newly selected and fab Dover Carnival (DCAL) girls, strutting their glamourous stuff in the warm sunshine.

Thats all folks! PB.

And Speaking of the 1940's take a look at this.....
Picture by Paul Watkins, Leader of Dover District Council.
While the rest of us were having a great time on Dover Seafront last sunday, revelling and even luxuriating in wall to wall Rolls Royces, Paul Watkins, Leader of DDC, was off in France performing ceremonial duties on behalf of the people of Dover. But it wasnt all hardship for Paul, as he got to meet our performing Rolls Royce engined Spitfire up close... as you can see above. And what a picture it is too! The top shot is marvellous, almost painterly in effect, perhaps Paul dashed it up with canvas and brush, well, he was in the right country for artistic endeavour. But a lovely picture indeed. This is the Spitfire that on the day re-created the Charles Stewart Rolls feat of crossing the channel both ways non stop. Then performed stunning acrobatics over Dover Harbour to thrill the huge crowd.
Paul was in fact attending a Rolls Royce reception during which a special commemorative medallion was presented to the chap in the picture below left. He is the Paul Watkins equivalent in Calais, President of the CAC, Msr Phillipe Blet...seen here of course with our very own Paul Watkins. The picture on the right shows Paul mingling further...in the shot you can see the Spitfire pilot who performed the daring display.. Mr Phil O'Dell chief test pilot for Rolls Royce.
We will have a pic of the Medallion mentioned above shortly.. also details of the Hellfire Corner Weekend.

Yes here we are just in...The picture on the left shows the striking Medallion presented by Rolls Royce to the people of Calais.
Many thanks to Paul Watkins for the pictures and information.
