Leigh Vickers is a qualified deckhand, a member of the merchant navy currently working with P&O, but in his spare time he paints up a real storm without ever having to go to sea. Sure he has seen many a stormy night in the channel, but now as a way of switching off, when he is not pacing the deck, he pursues a seperate career with his other love... Painting.
Last Sunday at an open day, artist Leigh put on a demonstration of his art at The Galleria Varietique in the London Road, right here in Dover. The picture on the left was painted using a variety of mixed media, including even car body spray, which produces that beautiful flat surface, but essentially and generally Leigh uses very modern Acrylic paints.
Leigh's wife Louise was on hand at the Gallery organising things and promptly supplied us, I was there with ColetteB, with a very nice glass of wine which helped the proceedings flow. She was a very genial and pleasant host. We reckon that's Louise in the picture on the left although she modestly denies it.
Leigh reckons he is currently trying to find a style, having experimented exhaustively with different styles and different subjects, but we suspect he has found his niche with that picture on the left.
The selling price for this painting is £175 and worth every penny. It is quite a large picture. I am unsure of the dimensions.

Leigh Vickers in full demonstration mode on his latest work at the Galleria Varietique last sunday Nov 18. If you are interested in any of his work please call along to this gallery at 196-197 London Road. The picture on the right shows Leigh with wife Louise but my picture doesnt do Louise justice alas. Best leave that to the maestro. Good luck to them both.
