Kent Police and the Dover District Community Safety Unit have responded to concerns about a disused property being used by drug takers.

Maison Dieu Lodge, a disused residential home in Dover had got in to a state of complete disrepair and generated a number of complaints from local residents about rough sleepers and drug use.

The property has now been securely boarded up with metal shutters and there have been no further reported problems.

As a former resident of Dover this article does not surprise me. Anyone who knows Dover will also know that the problem is endemic in the area and hitherto such matters have been"swept under the carpet". A more robust campaign is required utilising all agencies who have knowledge and experience of the problem. It can not be left to the police alone although they seem to bear the brunt of complaints . The council and private individuals who own or have control of derelict properties should be taken to task over poor security of these properties. Whilst there are such properties there will always be anti social behaviour`
