Some good news for WHPS is that (TC/13/00013) Tree Consent in a conservation area has been agreed by DDC and in principal from EH

This will allow us to begin planning to do some major tree and scrub clearance work in the North Lines moats (in the area around the North Entrance Road bridge through to the Detached Bastion. Not only are they imposing and damaging the heritage (mostly self seeded sycamore that is of no benefit to the wildlife) but they also provide cover for vandalism that all too often takes place. Planning will also involve the White Cliffs Countryside Partnership as we would like to retain things like berry-bearing plants that feed birds and wood piles for insects. Work will only involve the, moat floor as walls could prove very costly to touch !!

Hopefully the project can kick off in the spring and will be a very long term project and will involve volunteers, paid work, and maybe even community payback. It is a huge area so would be a long term project. It is a long term aim to be able to make this section of moat generally accessible like the Drop Redoubt with heritage trails and interpretation.
