Not the weekend but a half-term activity -

Fancy wading in your wellies at half term?
You could be helping trout travel!

The river Dour has a unique kind of trout. It's hard for the fish to travel upstream so work is being done to make it easier for them. It keeps our trout healthier if they don't just breed in small groups, so being able to travel upstream is important and also means if one area looses a lot of fish they are naturally replaced.

On Tuesday 27th October from 9.45am to 4.00pm South East Rivers Trust will be working in the river close to Minnis Lane in the village of River. They would love some help from local young people and their families to change the layout of crossing structure that has been made from branches in the river - they don't want to take it away - it just needs a few careful changes to be made to allow fish to get upstream.

Could you help? Under 16s need to be accompanied by a parent and you will need to bring wellies and a packed lunch. Drinks will be provided. Please let SERT know if you are coming to help by calling Chris Gardner on 07454 653005. All offers of help are welcomed, but too many people at one time would churn up the river bed. Wellies also need to be cleaned with special solution so nothing on them harms the river, and hand washing facilities and gloves will be provided as there is a risk of Weil's disease from river water if hands are not washed.

Once the work is complete it would be great if local people can check that the river crossing has not blocked the water flow again. If that happens, please let us know on the number above.
