  I use the good old check of sinking egg in water after they gone past their date. It is just consumerism effecting people in that they just assume once that date has gone by their sense goes too. Sensible stocking helps too, not buying tons of perishable food or freezing it. Think I only put one food waste bag out every 2-3 weeks and that's mostly banana skins and tea bags.
