TOILETS at East Cliff can now be used by the public - for 20p a time - following an official opening last week.

The mayor of Dover and Port chief Tim Waggott helped cut the ribbon of the new Pebbles kiosk and refurbished toilets on the promenade last Thursday.

Pebbles say the store "sells everything you would expect to find in a traditional sea front shop from ice-creams to Dover souvenirs".

The refurbished public toilets, which cost £90,000, are the result of an agreement between Dover District Council, Dover Town Council and the Port of Dover, with the final decision made by the Labour-run town council.

Pebbles director Cllr Sue Jones, as revealed in Express, last year "misdirected" fellow councillors after failing to declare an interest when she chaired the committee overseeing the toilets' revamp.

But Cllr Jones won the bid a second time after an extraordinary council meeting ordered the toilets to be retendered.

Other options included an American-style diner and a Channel Swimmers lockers block.

Cllr Jones said: "It has been a long and challenging road to get to this stage but we knew how keen locals were to see the new facilities open and hope we can meet their expectations.

"This is very much a community facility as well as something we can be proud our visitors will experience."

The facilities will be open every day from April to October from 10am until late afternoon, with extended evenings during busy times.
