Sure many of us have seen the plans/idea for this project, it is lacking inclusion in the 'master plan' as there is a consultation for 8 weeks. This would make an excellent addition and draw for people into the town and help develop the western heights with the fort also.

This has been talked about for many years now. John Pegg keeps at it and every time English heritage seem onside something happens and it goes on the back burner.

I thought it had dropped of the radar from the last time I saw it. As then as now I thought it would be an excellent addition and draw for Dover. Just highlighting as they are doing a master plan for the western heights and it is not included at present, and if it is not it will just slip further. If it could be included it would certainly help or it will no doubt end up being a missed opportunity for the town.

As it says in article, English Heritage have no problem in principle. Getting it included in the masterplan is a step to achieving it, as would be a boon for the town. With what is included in the masterplan it would be beneficial as it has always been an issue getting tourism and people to visit the town. If we can do that then the town centre will get more trade and Dover may be more than a drive through for the continent. With the DTIZ as well we need investment and projects to support and drive some change.

English Heritage have always agreed in principle but baulked at the prospect of spending money, now they want a new design but this is the first time they have come up with that one.

If we can get it on the masterplan then at least some progress can hopefully be made.

I have a horrible feeling we will never get the Memorial but I sincerely hope I am wrong.

People need to voice that they want it to be included or it will certainly not happen. Need to get views sent to the consultation so that it can be included in the plan. If you think oh well then it won't happen, just an email to register your opinion on it is all that's needed, the more that get sent, the more they have to take it into consideration and include it into the Masterplan.

Re English Heritage/Western Heights, it may be worth remembering that EH folds next year and will be replaced with a charity with a much smaller portfolio, less monuments, fewer paid staff etc.

That doesn't stop them from gleefully selling Life memberships to the unsuspecting public who will be getting a lot less value for money in the ffuture.
I cannot see all the great events currently held at the castle carrying on the same.

My understanding is that EH life/ yearly memberships will transfer over, as will the friends of DC, events will almost certainly be smaller and less often. Small sites may well be closed or become what EH call key holder sites, ie a local person holds the key and will let you in upon request, Some small sites may well just close or be passed to local councils to look after, some currently manned sites will become unstaffed. Large sites may have shorter opening hours while prime sites - stonehenge, Dover etc will remain much as they are now.

They lost a lot of good quality staff when they closed many of their sites for winter except weekends. Knowledgeable and enthusiastic staff are important in making a visit to an historical site memorable.

The visitors to the Tower of London will not have been disappointed with this chap. Pure brilliance from start to finish.
