Seems an appropriate time for some more history.....

About 3/4 years ago WHPS started some work on tiding up the Redoubt dicthes. Plants and bushes cut back, rubble eventually removed, and we started to take down the ivy which penetrates and eventually blows out bricks on the walls

We get an urgent message to STOP REMOVING IVY from EH !! We are told of a two year study, with the Heights as a key player, in examining the effects of ivy on heritage with a top university.

The conclusion is that ivy can act as a shield from heat that can damage brickwork, but if the walls are damaged it can actually do more damage - common sense eh?

So EH tell us we are not to remove any more ivy from walls and we are only able to prune back to a % each year, because there is no money available to repoint the mortar once the bricks are removed - this then goes back to them spending £250k on just the outside of the Redoubt.

Two further years of negotiation and we now have some permission to remove limited growth inside the Redoubt, a job likely to need expensive materials and sdaffold towers.

In reply to Jan - unfortunately 'plants' in the walls are in places TREES with diameters over ONE FOOT and are not uncommon and individually probably will costs thousands of pounds to remove and repair the damage made,
