In two years time we will be commemorating the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of World War One. Most other European countries have large memorials already, or at least in the planning stages while the French and Belgians preserve the war graves of far too many of our fallen in the two conflicts that tore apart the continent. Troops from all over the commonwealth fought and died alongside British troops in the defence of our freedoms. Nowhere in the British Isles are all those names commemorated. There is a forces memorial that commemorates the names of our troops that have fallen in the Korean conflict and all the other wars since.

Where better to show our respect for the sacrifice of so many than above the White Cliffs that were the last sight of so many and were celebrated in a song known to all and that became almost a symbol for so many of World War Two?

My own surname will appear 28 times on the proposed walls. How many times will your own name appear? It is a monumental sacrifice that affected every family in the Commonwealth, do we not owe it to them to commemorate their sacrifice?

On the practical side, Dover (in particular Dover Castle) is seen as, at best, a day trip destination. With such a memorial on the Western Heights we would have something that would attract visitors from around the world and a great many of them would stay to visit the castle and maybe learn something of Dover's history. The proposed National War Memorial represents both a debt to the fallen that should be paid and an opportunity for Dover that we can not afford to miss.
