    I thought that was a memorial to the Merchant Navy in the 2 World Wars, Alec.

    I was thinking along the lines from 1500s onward; after all, the British Empire was built on the toil and dedication of generations of seamen, and that is also how so many British people settled in North America, Australia, New Zealand, and southern Africa.

    Surely you will agree that Lord Nelson didn't carry a pair of binoculars, but used a device designed for one eye only. His dress was also rather different to the one the officer above is wearing, starting with the admiral's hat.
