    Quick before its too late

Digging has started at Folkestone as swarms of treasure hunters search for 30 pieces of gold - worth a total of £10,000 - buried at the beach.

Madcap German artist Michael Sailstorfer has hidden the 24-carat gold bars on the Outer Harbour beach, near Sunny Sands, as part of the town's arts festival.

He is encouraging people to start looking for the gold bricks at low tide between 4pm and 9pm today - because they can KEEP what they find.

The bricks, of different sizes and worth up to £500, have been hidden underneath the sands on the beach by the artist,

The installation, entitled "Folkestone Digs", is funded by Bristol-based designers Situations.

Berlin-based artist Sailstorfer's stunt is the 21st artistic contribution to the Folkestone Triennial, which was launched today.

Situations director Claire Doherty said: "Members of the public can search for the gold. The pieces are worth £250 to £500 and they are buried at varying depths.

"We have also buried washers because of people expected to come with metal detectors."

She added: "So often public art funding is spent on a static sculpture or a bauble on a roundabout and part of what we do is to say, actually sometimes a temporary project can have as much impact in the collective memory as something that has been there a long time."
Treasure hunters are expected to flock to Folkestone during high-tide
