I think the increase should not go ahead and I believe that diesel should be reduced as well - help transporting goods around the country and county.

The State financially depends to a large degree on fuel tax, and if that tax was not kept, or was reduced, or were not to be increased, the missing money would be reaped in through other taxes.
It doesn't affect me personally, as I couldn't afford a car, nor the fuel, nor the road tax, the insurance or any other related expenses.

But the more it goes up, the less people will use their cars, so less income for the treasury.

You are right, Roger. But, if the Treasury needs the money, and does not take it from hiked fuel taxes, then they might have to reduce pensions, or JSA, or other benefits, or working tax credits, or spending on the NHS, or on the armed Forces, or on the Police...
Otherwise they could put a special one-off tax on the super-rich...or not give aid to India...
But somewhere, the money must come in, and it's probably each individual's preference where it should come from.

Ha! You think fuel taxes are high? Ozzy is set to increase the carbon floor price. Now that really is a game changer.

Oil price manipulation 'could have driven up food and household goods prices' as well as petrol
Families could have been paying too much for food and everyday household goods if companies
are found to have fixed the oil price, the Government has indicated.
The actions of the traders are having an impact on the price at the pump, it is said
Officials admitted the impact of oil-price fixing could go be much wider than driving up petrol prices,
after the European officials raided companies suspected of "colluding" to distort the market.
Fears are growing that a fresh financial scandal has hit consumers' pockets, after the
European Commission revealed this week it is conducting an inquiry into allegations of fuel price-fixing.
BP and Shell, along with a Norwegian oil giant, Statoil, are suspected of having "colluded in reporting
distorted prices to manipulate the published prices for a number of oil and biofuel products".
Ed Davey, the Energy Secretary, has promised companies will face the "full force of the law" if their
behaviour is found to have "driven up" petrol prices.
However, his Department of Energy and Climate Change also acknowledged the impact of oil market
rigging could be bigger than simply affecting petrol prices.

Wont solve the problem but a £60 spend at Tesco this week gives 10p off a litre at the pumps.
