Originally I thought it might be Afghan-related, but then I thought, Why?

Then I looked at the information available. We know it turned west. We know it flew for at least 6 more hours. We know the comms were disabled, including the radar transponder and (presumably) the emergency beacon. We know it was out of radar range all that time. Only military radar would have picked it up over the open sea, and even then only by pure luck. The only hostile shore in that direction is Southern Somalia, where there is no radar coverage except by warships looking for pirate ships.

The fact that no ransom demand has been made indicates, I believe, that the plane might have run out of fuel before reaching the coast or that a passenger/crew rebellion might have caused the destruction of the plane.
