When DDC were planning the Bench St car park I wrote to them supporting their plans but with the caveat that they should put height barriers at the entrance to prevent unauthorised entry by travellers - sorry, wealthy caravan owners seeking a free place to park their cars and trailers illegally. I pointed out that, having been formally warned of such a likely happening, if the council failed to act to prevent it, I would hold them financially responsible if my business opposite suffered as a result. received a polite reply informing me that my concerns had been noted. This picture speaks for itself.

Normally they use the Russel Street car park knowing that having Irish number plates mean that they will be left alone by the parking wardens. I wonder how much rubbish they will leave behind this time?

Not Irish. UK plates 15 and 13 reg. Not old junk like proper travellers drive. And caravans I couldn't afford.

Send the details to DDC car parking Peter, they will be down like a shot in a week or so.

Tweeted to Phil Hayes at Dover Distress. Might make the August bank holiday special.

At least we now know where to go if requiring bargain electrical goods or maybe some high quality building work done.

The sign photographed on an earlier thread says 365 days a year payments to park there.

Parking is free on Sundays for cars. But caravans, motorhomes and commercial vehicles are specifically banned. The sign you refer to, Karlos, is wrong and not in accordance with the traffic order authorising the charging.

The relevant part of my email to the council read as follows: "Can you also please confirm that the design of the new car park incorporates robust fencing and height barriers to prevent the entry of vehicles larger than the 'cars and motorcycles only' mentioned as the classes of vehicles permitted to use the new car park. I am sure the Council do not want to see a repeat of the frequent incursions mounted by the traveller community which have plagued the Russell St car park in recent years. If business owners and residents in the immediate area of the new car park suffer from the consequences of such incursions in the future, you can be assured that redress will be sought from DDC."
The reply: "In relation to your point concerning fencing and a height barrier, the finished design has not yet been finalised but your comments will be taken into account." Not.

Throwing my hat in the ring here.I have always thought that Canterbury Council have the right idea as motor homes are parked quite neatly at the Park and Ride Car park New Dover Road.Surely these Caravans which are parked in the new DDC car park are better than placed along the sea front.Perhaps DHB could build a special Car park for them as most of the owners are only passing through Dover.
On another note it is pleasing to see many visitors using our restauraunts.I observed some were being turned away from the establishment I was visiting .as it was full to capacity.
Dover is on the up

Sue, people who drive £35,000 4x4 vehicles and camp illegally in council car parks are hardly likely to use such facilities because they have to be paid for. Within 25 miles of Dover there are any number of sites where people can book a night's stay on the way to the port - if they take the time to do basic research and are prepared to pay. Whether the town centre is a suitable place for a caravan park I seriously doubt; in any case people who openly demonstrate contempt for local parking laws are hardly the sort of people we should encourage to visit Dover.
