The Orient Express.

Huge excitement in Deal yesterday as the magnificent Orient Express of famed reputation pulled in to platform one. The gorgeous train which exudes classic style stopped off on its second visit, allowing well heeled passengers the chance to enjoy Deal for two hours.

As you can see in the photograph, the visitors were met by blazing dazzling sunshine and Deal looked very good indeed and very welcoming. An army of lady greeters were on hand to meet the passengers, but most importantly of all they were met by the Mayor of Deal herself, Cllr Mrs Marlene Burnham looking suitably fashionable for the occasion. That's Marlene on the right of the picture.. shown posing for photographs with some of the passengers. The passengers then dispersed around the town for two hours bringing much needed business, and many could be seen on the seafront later posing for yet more photographs, and all round you could see they were really enjoying their visit to Deal. There were over 600 Jobs and 250 Apprenticeships up for grabs at This Week’s MPs’ Jobs Fair.

On Tuesday, over 3000 jobseekers visited the Jobs and Apprenticeships Fair organised by Thanet’s two local MPs, Laura Sandys and Sir Roger Gale. The Minister for Employment Mr Grayling spoke at the event and met with employers offering jobs as well as those who were looking for work. We know many of our local Dovorians who were (and are) keen to find work showed a lot of interest in this fair.

Speaking after the event, Laura Sandys said: “I am so pleased that Sir Roger and I were able to organise this event. We had over 650 jobs and over 250 apprenticeships up for grabs in The Winter Gardens yesterday in lots of different sectors. Our aim is to help people back into work and we’ve already received a great deal of positive feedback from both jobseekers and employers who have said how useful it was to get everyone together under one roof. I very much hope that lots of the people who attended the Fair will find a new job as a result of coming along.”

Simon Wallace, Director of SW Flooring said: “We had an outstanding enquiry level. Congratulations... for putting on such a successful event, and I am sure it will be recorded as one of the best the area has had for a long time.”

A local jobseeker said: “I attended the jobs fair at the Winter Gardens today. Thanks to you and Sir Roger Gale for being part of its organisation. Hopefully, people will feel that they are being helped in their quest for work. Let’s hope that with investment and commitment from employers, issues of employment and regeneration will be met positively from here on in.”

The Fair was held at The Winter Gardens on Tuesday 26th June from 10.00-15.00. The Jobs and Apprenticeships Fair was kindly sponsored by Pfizer and Thanet Leisureforce. We were also fortunate enough to work in partnership with Jobcentre Plus, Kent County Council, Thanet District Council, Thanet College, Thorley Taverns, Thanet and East Kent Chamber and EKS Office Equipment.

To Buy or Not to Buy that is the Question....

The National Trust is launching a £1.2m fund raising appeal so that they can purchase and safeguard for you and me a part of our White Cliffs of Dover. They already own the parts to the immediate west and east and are going for the full deck as it were. This is bamboozling in some ways ..as ask any man in the street and he will tell you that we the public own this already and if indeed we dont and the National Trust are purchasing it..then who are they purchasing it from?? HMG?..the Crown?

A shaft of sunlight in the picture above highlights miraculously the area of Cliff which collapsed a few months back. The cliffs are receding at an average rate of 1cm (0.4in) per year, but occasionally large chunks like this crash into the sea in spectacular fashion. It is this continued erosion that keeps them sparkling white and a true global symbol, immortalised both in song and in literature.
