Celebrations in that fine old town of Sandwich.

And what pray are we celebrating asks you with a quizical eyebrow...why the humble Sandwich itself. That item of culinary desire savoured by generations.

Yes the weekend just gone celebrated the invention of the sandwich 250 years ago. The fourth Earl of Sandwich it seems had a fondness for card games and gambling..heavens! the debauchery of it all...well these games went on into the night, indeed they went on night and day.

The Earl also had a desire to eat but did not want his card game disrupted..so with gay aplomb ordered that two cuts of bread be brought to him without delay and that these cuts of bread should be filled with beef..'beef ma'am!' said he.

And they duly were brought to him in aforementioned fashion. And so we had the birth of the humble sandwich. The year 1762.

On Sunday the 11th Earl of Sandwich, who shares his name with the fourth Earl, John Montagu, held a lunch in Sandwich.

Sadly we didn't make the guest list to bring you the latest but we did capture the delightful pictures you see here.

John Montagu said: "I am delighted to wish a happy 250th birthday to the sandwich. My ancestor, the 4th Earl, could never have imagined that his simple invention would spawn a multi-billion dollar industry, employing hundreds of thousands of people in this country" and indeed around the world.
According to the British Sandwich Association the industry employs more than 300,000 people in the UK and has a commercial value of over £6bn. To show how global this news is ..newspapers and websites all around the world from Vancouver to New Delhi have carried this story. Bing it and see. Breathtaking!

Picture left shows a section of the fair in full flow with everyone dining al fresco and with the children listening to storytellers and so on. Great fun all round. Top pictures shows the fab soldiers as they escorted the Mayor on his walkabout. Not sure of the details about these soldiers so if anyone can help out please let us know. Do they date from 1762??

Picture below shows the Mayor Cllr J J Watts leading the party on it's way to open the fair. The day seemed to go off without a hitch and the whole occasion enjoyed some reasonable weather. We can now look forward to at least another 250 years of the humble sandwich. Story and Pictures...Paul Boland.

Dont let them take your Fountain away!

Quietly and without too much fuss this fountain will soon be gone. Both councils DDC and DTC have quietly colluded in it's proposed demise. It is to be replaced with some kind of gurgling water feature that can be switched on and off like a tap. This water feature will be safe, it will be dull, but above all it will be cheap. We dont want cheap. We want this traditional fountain to stay as it is in situ. It is loved by all. Tourists flock to it and locals relax around it. The picture above is the standard picture taken by a million tourist cameras..we've exagerated it's look as you can see, but let them continue to enjoy this scene and snap this shot.

There is a "Big Lunch" due to be held in Market Square on the Jubilee weekend. Let the people enjoy the Lunch with the Fountain on. Let them sit around it and enjoy it. Think continental! Details of this LUNCH are already in our Forum but we will reproduce it again here now for easy convenience. PB.

As part of celebrations to mark The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, Dover District Council is supporting The Big Jubilee Lunch with a special event at the Big Screen Live Site at Dover Market Square on Sunday 3 June from 11am to 5pm.

Communities are invited to come along to celebrate the occasion with family and friends, bring a picnic with them, and join in with The Big Jubilee Lunch. Dover District Council will be providing tables and chairs at the Market Square, and there will be a range of entertainment, including a life-size Punch and Judy, live music and outside games. The BBC will be showing special Jubilee coverage on the Big Screen.

The Big Lunch is an idea from the Eden Project, funded by the Big Lottery. The aim is to encourage as many people in the UK as possible to have lunch with their neighbours once a year, for a few hours of community, friendship and fun. Since starting in 2009, thousands of Big Lunches have taken place in all kinds of communities, and in 2011 the number of participants doubled to the best part of two million. This year, the event will be called The Big Jubilee Lunch and will proudly support The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations on Sunday 3 June.

For more information on The Big Lunch, or to plan your own Big Lunch event, please see www.thebiglunch.com or for more information on the event in Dover Market Square, see www.dover.gov.uk .
