20 December 2010

Congratulations Vic you made it to our Christmas No 1 picture slot....

This is the one and only irrepressible Vic Matcham emerging Bond-like from the briney blue in 2005. Gosh can you believe it's as long ago as 2005. Every year Vic sports a different outfit for his big splash. Word is he is doing it again this year. If you want to enjoy a madcap half hour over the Christmas period then pop down onto the beach on Boxing Day and see Vic and a whole brace of insane Dovorians taking the plunge. Totally mad...but of course great fun, and all mostly for a good cause of one kind or another. It happens at midday but get there a bit earlier so you dont miss all the fun and frolics.

As mentioned above lots of people will be doing it for various causes. But just to single out one group here..the London Road Community Forum ..as we had some info through from the guys there.....

Andy Cooper of LCRF says: “In what has to be considered a moment of complete lunacy, Jeanette Harper and I agreed that we would both do the annual Boxing Day dip this year in aid of raising funds for the LRCF. Whether one or either of us thought we’d talk each other out of it, I’m not really sure – but the upshot is that we’ll be braving the icy waters of the Dover Strait on Boxing Day at noon as part of the Dover Lifeguards Club’s Polar Dip. I believe Vic Matcham is also doing it! and I think Jeanette is putting on some food at The White Horse afterwards...."

So there you are, if you want to help out the LRCF drop into the White Horse and give them a few bob. I have already done so this week and was parted from my warmly held fiver by Jeanette Harper...gosh and Ive had that fiver for years!!

Or a sponsorship form is available from fabric@thefabricfairy.com.
Good luck guys and good luck to all the plungers. Doverforum will be there with camera in hand all being well to bring a few pix to our readers in due course. PB.

I saw three ships come sailing in............

Yes in and out they go, tooing and froing all day long. More than 7,000 FOOT PASSENGERS have passed through the Port since Monday just gone...this information directly from DHB. So a great performance. Good ol' Dover has done it again when the chips are down. The information below just in from the Dover Harbour Board....

As planes and trains struggle to return to normality following the extreme weather, the Port of Dover continues to be described as the only reliable way out of the country.

The Port has remained open throughout with all ferry operators currently running to schedule. Through thorough advance planning, implementation of round the clock gritting and clearing, welfare arrangements and excellent coordination and collaboration between the port and ferry operators, the Port of Dover has handled around 10 times more foot passengers than normal. Reflecting the international dimension of the operation, the port has also liaised closely with its sister ports in France in order to coordinate efforts for those travelling from across Europe to and from the UK.

Reminiscent of the ash cloud crisis, the port has seen hundreds and thousands of passengers arriving by train at Dover turning to the port and ferry operators for a way home. Robin Dodridge, Director of Corporate Operations, said, “we and our ferry operator colleagues have been working flat out to accommodate and look after those who were facing a bleak Christmas away from family and friends. We will continue to work tirelessly in order to reunite those who have been displaced having had their previous travel arrangements disrupted. We wish them all what we hope will now be a very happy Christmas.”

However, do not leave it too late to make your travel arrangements. The port will be shutting down for Christmas Day during Christmas Eve with the last sailing for foot passengers departing at 1450hrs on 24th December and the last sailing for vehicles leaving at 1855hrs the same day. In order to experience the resilient, reliable and welcoming service on offer at the port that has kept on going to get travellers home for Christmas, passengers are advised to book before travelling.

You will remember the By-Election of last week. It was a hard fought affair.. particularly so on this forum and it resulted in Labour retaking the seat previously held by Conservative Roger Frayne. It was also notable for the fact that UKIP knocked the "spineless" Libdems into fourth place, so something of a victory for UKIP also, albeit in a smaller way. Following on from all this intense politicking.. we have just received this statement immediately below from the Labour Group....

Labour.. on Retaking the Dover County Council Seat

At a by-election held on 16 December for the Dover seat on Kent County Council, Labour’s Gordon Cowan topped the poll, retaking the seat from the Conservatives and pushing the Lib-Dems into fourth position behind UKIP.

Cllr Leslie Christie, Leader of the Labour Group on Kent County Council, welcomed the victory of the Labour candidate, saying:
“I welcome this victory with great pleasure.  It marks the beginning of the return of the Labour Party to holding its traditional seats of power in Kent.  The result is a clear reaction to the slash and burn policies of the Con-Dem Coalition government and I look forward to welcoming Gordon as a member of the County Labour Group.”
Gordon Cowan pictured left said: “Across the country people are already fed up with the Conservatives’ right-wing policies. And they are even more fed up with the spineless collaboration of the Lib-Dems who lost 90% of their support in Dover. I am looking forward to rejoining my Labour colleagues on Kent County Council and to fighting to protect services and the economy from the Conservative and Lib-Dem regime at County Hall. I would like to thank all those who came out in the sleet and the cold to vote for Labour and for fairness.”
