Mid Summer Soiree !

All Pictures by...
Colette Boland

For the past five or six or maybe even seven years, Mr Hannent himself, Deputy Mayor of All Dover and life long Forumite, along with the adoring and amiable wife Linda, have held an annual Soiree to coincide with the great carnival day. This year there was no carnival alas, but the leafy riverside "do" went ahead in fine, glorious, and super colourful style. Not only did we have that usual outdoor activity as enjoyed by all citizens in the summer months, the humble barbecue, but this year there was an International Sausage Competition as well. I kid you not...flavours and varieties to die for. All tasted and judged by the attendees and voted upon with delectable dedication.

The picture above left gets top slot on the page for the sheer fun and frivolity it displays, with none other than long time favourite Ian Lillford enjoying his pint of Beer in jolly japes jovial form. Alongside Ian, or in the foreground more accurately, is new Forumite Tony Jayms, both clearly enjoying the hi-summer occasion.

And here we have the 'hostests with the mostests' David Hannent himself and alongside him wife 'Lady' Linda Hannent who is of course our current Deputy Mayoress of Dover. They know how to put on a good summer party, so much so that it is now an established annual event in the social whirlist's calender. There were more Mayors and Deputy Mayors at the "do" than you could shake a stick at...if you ever wanted to shake a stick that is!

On the left here we have the oul' grizzled veteran otherwise known as the Editor of Doverforum, Paul Boland, seen here with delightful daughter, the high flying BrionyB. To the right of same picture is the irrepressible Vic Matcham trying to nuzzle PaulB's neck in true vampire mode. The picture on the right shows one of the BBQ chefs for the afternoon, yes none other than Alan Shirley, one of the head honchos from The Dover Chamber of Commerce, with his family there in the background.

Briony Boland congratulates Jeanette Harper of The White Horse Pub who was the winner by a short head of the International Sausage Competition. Very tasty.. and the sausages werent bad either !! But seriously though all very tasty, the winning sausage can be found on the menu at The White Horse.

The delightful English folk band played on through proceedings in fine style as the river flowed gently by in the background. I'm ashamed to say I dont know the name of the band as I write, but someone will let me know Im sure...ah, many thanks, just had the info through, see the comments below..the band are called The Old Lone Gin Band.

As the smoke from the barbecue wafts across the assembled throng, and as the sausages sizzle sumptiously, we can just make out a fine collection of citizenry here. Former Mayor Lynn Young on the left, former Mayor Bob Markham in the centre, and Mr Lunn next to them who was also an extra chef d'barbecue. That's a smidgen of French there.

In charge of organising and gathering the results of the Competition were Colette Boland and Ian Lillford and here they are giggling furiously at the seriousness of it all! I can only add that I am disgruntled that my entry didnt at least receive honourable mention. Picture on right shows some of the connoisseurs gathering around and limbering up their tastebuds for the assault on the said sausages.

And the jollity goes on...entourage in full rocket fueled flight. ColetteB, BB and Jan Tranter, another former Mayor of Dover. Nice couple Maureen and Bill on the right hand side enjoying the lovely summers day. There were more pictures but we have to stop somewhere and that time has come...PaulB.

Thats all Folks!
