Mary Leaves The Mercury!

19 July 2007

Ah decisions decisions!! the picture on the left shows Mary Graham at a recent picnic trying to decide whether to have champagne or beer, beer or champagne? Oh dear! these decisions can be so difficult. Recently however, Mary had to make an even bigger decision than the one shown here, when she was offered a job in Maidstone with the Kent Messenger. Accepting the job meant of course leaving not only Dover itself, but her colleagues at the Dover Mercury, and of course all her friends here in town. Sadly and with reluctance Mary opted for the most obvious career move and will be joining the Kent Messenger within the next fortnight. She departs Dover August 1.

Naturally she will be greatly missed in Dover as she was a terrific 'roving' reporter, both fair and firm, always agreeably pleasant but with a great way of extracting information from the sometimes unsuspecting populace. She formed half of a dynamic duo with Graham Tutthill and together they put The Dover Mercury back on the map. All the guys at family Doverforum are sad to see her go but wish her good luck!

I asked Mary for a statement earlier today...and here it is below...

I was asked by PaulB to write a little something about my departure and for a writer my mind has gone annoyingly blank, so this isn't going to win any literary prizes, but...

As most of you hopefully know by now I am leaving the Mercury on August 1, to go and work for the Kent Messenger newspaper, in Maidstone. While I am chuffed to get the job, I will be really sad to leave.
I have had a fab 3 1/2 years here mainly because of the great people I have met - people who have trusted me with their stories, kept me entertained and also put up with me.

I have sent round a mass e-mail regarding a leaving drinks thingymiwotsit a few of us have arranged for August 11 (yes after my last day) but as they say, we are having a few technical difficulties, so please don't be offended if you didn't receive it.

So this is an open invitation, for anyone who would like to come for a few drinks on Saturday, August 11, at the White Horse, St James's Street, from 6.30pm onwards. That Saturday is the first day of the Regatta, and fireworks are on around 9pm, so a few of us thought this would be appropriate for anyone who then wants to leave to watch the fireworks. It would be lovely to see forumites and non-forumites there, if you can pop in.

Thanks to PaulB for letting me put this message here. I wouldn't be where I am today without him. (I was told to say that :-0 )

And thanks to you guys for making life in Dover so much fun.

Mary x
